Awami Action Committee Observes Prisoner’s Day Mirwaiz All Praise for Political Detainees’ Conviction

Srinagar, October 11 (Kashmir Voice): In occupied Kashmir, in keeping with its tradition since 1965, the Awami Action Committee, headed by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, observed October 10 as the Prisoner’s Day, yesterday.
According to media sources, a seminar in connection with the day was held at the AAC headquarters in Srinagar where participants paid rich tributes to the courage and steadfastness shown by the hundreds of Kashmiri prisoners lodged in various jails in and outside occupied Kashmir. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who was supposed to preside over the seminar, wasn’t allowed by the authorities, as he continues to be under house detention. However, he addressed the participants over telephone from his residence. The Mirwaiz saluted the bravery of those bearing the hardships of prison for their political convictions. He said that it was unfortunate that those demanding resolution of the Kashmir dispute in its historical context were caged and jailed. He said repression and locking up people arbitrarily as a punishment for their political convictions will not undo the Kashmir dispute nor help resolve it. He demanded that all political prisoners should be released forthwith and sincere steps taken for the resolution of this dispute. It was on this day in 1965 when the AAC’s founder president, Mirwaiz Molvi Muhammad Farooq, was arrested by the puppet authorities for representing the political aspirations of Kashmiri people and was kept in prison for the next two and a half years. He was subjected to severe torture during his illegal detention. Besides hundreds of AAC activists and workers, others who participated in the event included resistance leaders G N Zaki, Musadiq Aadil, Merajudin Rabani, representative of Syed Ali Gilani, Peer Ghulam Nabi and Jaffar Kashmiri. The speakers paid rich tributes to the courage of late Mirwaiz Molvi Muhammad Farooq and expressed serious concern over the plight of Kashmiri detainees. They demanded immediate release of all political prisoners including Shabbir Ahmed Shah, Masarrat Aalam Butt, Aasiya Andrabi, Shahid-ul-Islam, Ayaz Akbar, Altaf Ahmed Shah, Dr Muhammad Qasim Fakhtoo, Merajuddin Kalwal, Nayeem Ahmed Khan, Fehmeeda Sofi, Atif Ahmed and others.
