Elderly Man Continues To Languish In IOK Jail

Srinagar, October 11 (Kashmir Voice): In occupied Kashmir, a 76-year-old man from Sopore, Haji Sheikh Mohammad Yousuf, continues to remain in illegal detention under draconian law, Public Safety Acts (PSA), for the past fourteen months despite the quashing of his PSA by the court of law.
According to media sources, Sheikh Mohammad Yousuf is father of two martyred sons. His son Mohammad Altaf Sheikh was killed by unknown gunmen at New Colony in Sopore in 2015 and Abdul Rauf, a PhD scholar, was martyred during an attack on army camp in Srinagar in 2001. He was traveling home from Aligarh when he was hit by a bullet fired by the troops. Yousuf family members include his wife, his daughter-in-law and her three children. Yousuf’s wife Hanifa Begum, 74, told media that on the night of August 8 last year during public uprising triggered by Burhan Wani’s killing, policemen came to arrest Yousuf but he told them that he would himself report at the police station in the morning. Yousuf went as he had promised but did not return. Hanifa Begum learnt from the police that Yousuf had been booked under the PSA and sent to Kupwara jail. Yousuf has turned 77-year-old in jail now. Hanifa Begum fears for his aged husband as Yousuf is a heart patient and has undergone two surgeries in his left eye as well. He is a pro-freedom activist and a member of Jamaat-e-Islami since his youthhood. The court granted him bail in November 2016 and March 2017 but the police did not release him and slapped the PSA for third time against him in April. KASHMIR VOICE
