Resistance Leaders Concerned Over Plight of Detainees

Srinagar, November 29 (Kashmir Voice): In occupied Kashmir, the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik, has expressed serious concern over the plight of hundreds of illegally detained Kashmiris languishing in New Delhi’s Tihar jail and other jails of India and the occupied territory.
According to media sources, the resistance leaders in a joint statement issued in Srinagar said, the jail authorities are badly treating the Kashmiri prisoners in complete violation of the jail manual. They condemned the thrashing of prisoners in Tihar jail and said that the ghastly act had put the lives of all Kashmiri political prisoners at risk. The leaders appealed to international organisations including the UN Human Rights Commission, Asia Watch and the Amnesty International to take cognizance of the matter and help ensure safety and security of prisoners as well as suitable medical treatment to those injured in the recent thrashing incident. Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik demanded shifting of the Kashmiri prisoners to jails in the Kashmir Valley to save them from being subjected to vengeance. Despite sufficient accommodation in local jails, Kashmiri detainees are shifted to outside jails and as such their families face immense difficulties to meet them, they said. The resistance leaders pointed out that the Indian government even ignores the ruling of its Supreme Court regarding prisoners wherein it has clearly directed the authorities to lodge the detainees in their home cities. “The thrashing incident in Tihar jail is as an extremely inhuman and immoral act,” they said and blamed the authorities for their bigoted mindset saying that these cowardly attacks are being carried on their directions. The leaders condemned thrashing of Syed Shahid Yusuf, the son of Syed Salahuddin, in high-security ward of Tihar jail, saying on the behest of jail authorities, the criminals are attacking and taking extreme steps against the Kashmiri detainees. “These criminals have admitted that they are carrying out the orders of jail administration and attacked and injured the Kashmiri prisoners,” they added. The resistance leaders said that the attack on Syed Shahid Yusuf and other prisoners was carried out by the jail administration. 18 detainees were injured by the Tamil Nadu Police deputed in Tihar jail, they said, adding that Dr Ghulam Muhammad Butt, Altaf Ahmed Shah, Ayaz Akbar, Raja Merajuddin Kalwal, Ahtisham, Shazad Ahmed, Muhammad Subhan, Muhammad Aslam Wani and Dr Waseem are lodged in the same ward.
