Locals Complain of Army Raj in Shopian Village DC Expresses Helplessness to Act against Troops

Srinagar, May 30 (Kashmir Voice): In occupied Kashmir, the residents of Sugan village of Shopian have complained that they are living in a state of constant fear as an army raj is prevailing in the area where people are harassed on daily basis.
According to media sources, the locals told media that no civilian government was visible in the area. “It is army that dictates terms. Mehbooba Mufti took votes from us, but never looked back. She handed us over to the Indian army personnel, who are thrashing us violently,” said a local representing his community. “It is Army Raj in the area and army doesn’t listen to anyone,” he added. Interestingly, Deputy Commissioner Shopian Gazanffer Ali, while talking to media expressed helplessness of civil administration saying, “Army comes under AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act).” “They have powers. They can even come into District Magistrate’s house and conduct searches. What can a district magistrate do?” he asked. While commenting on the vandalizing of residential houses and chopping off of fruit trees and damaging of orchards in the area by the troops, the DC admitted that the army had done a wrong act. “The district administration has no powers against Army. We can restrict them but we can’t go with them in the night. We will not allow them to do such acts. But when they do it, we are not witness to that. They do it. This is wrong. I am telling you it is totally wrong,” he said. On Monday morning, three army men including an officer were injured in a blast in the area. Later, the troops went on rampage and thrashed people, destroyed apple trees and damaged houses. KASHMIR VOICE
