Shopian Tragedy: Mirwaiz, Others Aghast Over Non-Provision of Justice to Victims

Srinagar, May 30 (Kashmir Voice): In occupied Kashmir, the Chairman of Hurriyat forum, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq while recalling the 2009 rape and murder of Aasiya and Neolofar of Shopian regretted that the case was brushed aside under a well-planned conspiracy to shield the culprits and to deprive the victim families of justice.
According to media sources, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq while addressing a religious gathering at Zoonimar in Srinagar said, “Nine years on, no investigation was held and the case was brushed aside on a self-made and highly manipulated investigation report of Indian Central Bureau of Investigation. Instead of ordering an impartial probe into the incident, the case was hushed up under a well planned conspiracy to shield the real culprits and to deprive the victim families of the justice.” “Those involved in the incidents like Shopian and Kunanposhpora continue to roam scot free and instead of ordering an impartial probe, culprits are having a field day,” he said and urged the world forums and rights organisations to take serious note of the war crimes being committed by the Indian forces in the occupied territory. The Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) while remembering Aasiya and Neelofar in a statement said, “India has been using rape as a weapon of war against the oppressed Kashmiris who have been struggling to secure their right to self-determination for decades.” Strongly condemning the Indian probe agencies for not delivering justice to the people of Kashmir, the DFP demanded an international probe into all the killings in Kashmir including that of Aasiya and Neelofar. The Jammu and Kashmir National Front termed the Shopian tragedy a blot on the men in uniform. “Aasiya and Neelofar were brutally raped and subsequently killed by the men in uniform on this day in 2009. Later, CBI was brought to shield the culprits,” a JKNF spokesman said. He added that Aasiya, Neelofar and victims of Kunanposhpora mass rape would always be remembered as victims of Indian oppression, suppression and tyranny. Hurriyat leaders, Muhammad Yousuf Naqash and Javaid Ahmed Mir, in a joint statement while expressing solidarity with the families of Aasiya and Neelofar deplored that the authorities were shielding the culprits. Meanwhile, Islamabad-based International Kashmir Lobby Group, Youth Forum For Kashmir, in a statement expressed solidarity with the family of Aasiya and Neelofar. It said that India was using rape as weapon of war in occupied Kashmir to suppress the Kashmiris’ freedom movement. KASHMIR VOICE
