Shutdown to Be Observed in Gaw Kadal Tomorrow

Srinagar, January 20 (Kashmir Voice): In occupied Kashmir, complete shutdown will be observed in Gaw Kadal, Basant Bagh, Kani-Kadal, Chota-Bazaar, Budshah Chowk and others areas of Srinagar, tomorrow, to mark the anniversary of Gaw Kadal massacre.
According to media sources, call for the shutdown has been given by the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik. More than 50 innocent people were killed in Gaw Kadal area of Srinagar on 21st January in 1990 when Indian forces had resorted to indiscriminate firing on peaceful demonstrators who were protesting against the molestation of several women by the troops on the previous night. The JRL in a statement issued in Srinagar termed the massacres carried out by Indian troops at Gaw Kadal, Handwara and Kupwara in the month of January in 1990s as a reminder of Indian illegal occupation and oppression in the occupied territory. It said that congregational prayers would also be held at Gaw Kadal, tomorrow. The statement said that united India during its struggle for freedom from Britain had witnessed only one Jalianwala Bagh massacre but the Kashmiri people have witnessed dozens of such incidents carried out by the Indian forces since 1990 and this slaughter was still going on unabated.
