Concern Expressed Over Plight of Kashmiri Detainees

Srinagar, May 09 (Kashmir Voice): In occupied Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) has expressed serious concern over the miserable plight of the illegally detained Kashmiri political prisoners languishing in different jails of the territory and India.
According to media sources, a DFP spokesman in a statement issued in Srinagar demanded unconditional release of all the Kashmiri political detainees on the basis that nothing has been proved against them even after long incarcerations and so-called questioning and trials. He condemned the arrest of many more pro-freedom activists including Mushtaq Ahmed of Ganderbal district. The spokesman demanded that the Kashmiri prisoners should be treated as political prisoners and must be granted all those rights which are in the jail manual and are recommended by the international forums dealing with political prisoners. One of the rights of such prisoners is their lodgment in the nearest jails so that their close relatives can meet them whenever they like, he added. The spokesman said that on one hand, the Kashmiri detainees were facing harsh attitude of the jail authorities while on the other side, these political prisoners were not heard in the judiciary, which had worsened their situation. He hailed the steadfastness and dedication of incarcerated party chairman, Shabbir Ahmed Shah, and all other Kashmiri prisoners who are the victims of political vendetta. He said that prolonged detentions would not be able to break the will and resolve of Shabbir Shah and other Hurriyat leaders who advocate the right to self-determination for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
